DIGITAL EDITION — 55 Good Things About West Virginia 2015
For 29 years, The State Journal has marked the transition from spring to summer in the Mountain State with a collection of feature stories showcasing what makes West Virginia great.
We call them good things, but anyone who has gathered the family in the car to catch a movie at Pipestem Drive-In or started a Saturday morning with a mad dog from Quality Bake Shoppe knows our good things are great in West Virginia.
This year, The State Journal is so very grateful for the University of Charleston serving as the sponsor of this publication and helping to spotlight the people, places, businesses and traditions that make West Virginia a special place.
Each year we start the hunt for the next round of “good things,” reaching out to colleagues, Facebook friends and sometimes even state officials to help us pinpoint new adventures, eateries and celebrations along with volunteers, entrepreneurs and historians who add a variety of colors to the patchwork quilt that makes up the state’s heritage.
Again this year we are profiling one “good thing” from each county. This is the fourth year we present the “55 Good Things About West Virginia Hall of Fame,” to feature past honorees that continue to be great.
The State Journal has amassed more than 1,500 profiles of “good things” since starting this publication, and we’ve tried not to repeat any of those. Each year it is our honor to shine a light on the people, places and things that may not always stand out but always sparkle as beacons of the values, ingenuity and spirit of West Virginia.
